Which disabilities benefit from Bypass Blocks?

W3C WAI Stories on how people use the web.

Physical

  • Keyboard only or mostly users who cannot or have difficulty using pointing and touch devices.
  • Assistive technologies that emulate the keyboard (e.g. on-screen keyboards, voice recognition) are used to navigate and interact with web pages.

Blind and Low Vision

  • Screen reader users were the primary advocates of the original bypass blocks requirement.
  • Improvements in web design and screen reader support for heading and landmark navigation have made the "Skip to Main Content" link less important to screen reader users.
NOTE: For example h1 elements and/or main landmarks are typically used for the main content and screen readers have built-in commands to navigate to these locations.
